Universal remote codes for streaming players

The short answer

Jasco publishes codes for some streaming players in its GE lists, by CL version, and they're below. Whether a universal remote works with your device depends on the device: Apple TV can learn an infrared remote, Roku publishes codes for Roku TVs, and Amazon documents HDMI-CEC for Fire TV.

This is the one equipment category where the code list is not the first question. Streaming device makers document different ways of working with other remotes, and some document none.

Where a device does accept infrared, the codes below come from Jasco's published GE lists. Where it does not, the section underneath explains what actually works instead.

Use the right device key first

AUXDVDSTBCBL

Streaming players have no device key of their own on most remotes. Jasco files them under the auxiliary and set-top categories, so try AUX first and the set-top keys after.

Streaming player codes by brand

Find your equipment brand, then the block naming the remote you are programming. Codes are not interchangeable between remote brands.

Netgear streaming players

Check for an infrared receiver before anything else

Roku suggests a phone-camera test for infrared remotes: switch to the selfie camera, point the remote at it and press buttons. A flashing signal shows the remote is sending infrared.

Which devices accept infrared

Apple TV can learn an infrared universal remote: Settings → Remotes and Devices → Learn Remote. Roku describes its simple remotes as infrared and its voice remotes as having a voice button. Amazon doesn't document using an infrared universal remote with Fire TV.

Roku TVs are a separate case. Roku publishes its own codes for universal remotes controlling a Roku TV, such as 2891 for GE and 11564 among its RCA codes; the guide to streaming devices lists them.

HDMI-CEC is the answer for the rest

HDMI-CEC lets devices connected by HDMI be controlled with one remote, as Google describes it. Amazon says you may need to turn it on to use some Fire TV features.

TV makers name it differently, according to Amazon's list: Anynet+ on Samsung, SIMPLINK on LG, BRAVIA Sync on Sony, and HDAVI Control, EZ Sync or VIERA Link on Panasonic.

When it doesn't work

No code from the list works

Check what the device's maker documents: Apple TV's Learn Remote, Roku's published Roku TV codes, or HDMI-CEC for Fire TV and Google TV devices.

The remote controls the TV but not the streaming stick

Turn on HDMI-CEC in the TV's settings. Amazon says you may need it to use some Fire TV features, and Google describes it as letting HDMI devices be controlled with one remote.

My Roku TV is not in this list

A Roku TV isn't a streaming player. Roku publishes its own universal remote codes for Roku TVs, such as 2891 for GE.

Do universal remotes work with streaming players?

It depends on the device. Apple TV can learn an infrared remote, and Roku publishes codes for Roku TVs. Amazon doesn't document using an infrared universal remote with Fire TV; it documents HDMI-CEC.

How do I tell if my streaming device uses infrared?
