Universal remote codes for cable and satellite boxes

The short answer

Program set-top box codes onto the SAT, CBL or STB key. The codes below come from Jasco's published GE lists, split by the CL version inside your remote. Note too that the provider's own remote is usually the better tool here: a universal remote covers power, volume, channels and playback, but rarely the coloured guide keys.

Set-top boxes are the category where a universal remote is most often a compromise rather than a replacement. Providers build heavy interactive features into their own remotes — coloured guide keys, search buttons, voice — and a large part of that never crosses into a universal code table.

What a universal remote does well here is consolidation: one handset for the television and the box, covering power, volume, channel changes and playback. Approach it with that expectation and the setup is straightforward.

Use the right device key first

Providers differ in which category they occupy. If SAT fails, try CBL — satellite and cable entries are separate blocks in most code tables even when the box is the same.

Which remote should control what

There are two ways round this problem, and the better one is often not the obvious one. You can program a universal remote to control the set-top box, or you can program the box's own remote to control the television — most provider remotes can store a TV code precisely for this.

The second route usually gives a better result, because the provider remote keeps every interactive key it was designed around and only needs to gain power and volume for the television. That is exactly what the code lists on the Sky pages in this site cover.

Use a universal remote for the box when you are consolidating several devices, or when the provider's remote has been lost.

What a universal remote will not reach

The coloured keys that drive interactive services, the dedicated search or voice keys, and the provider's own shortcut buttons are rarely in universal code tables. Some remotes carry a partial set for the largest providers; most carry none.

Power, volume, mute, the numeric keypad, channel up and down, and the playback transport keys are reliably covered. The directional keys and OK are usually present too, which is enough to navigate most guides even without the coloured shortcuts.

Sky and Virgin Media boxes

Sky and Virgin Media boxes each have their own entries in the code list published for your remote.

A Sky remote itself stores a television code rather than the reverse, which is usually the better arrangement: the Sky remote keeps every interactive key it was designed around and only gains power and volume for the television.

Comcast and Spectrum boxes

Comcast and Spectrum have both deployed set-top boxes from the same manufacturers, so their command sets frequently coincide and their code entries overlap.

If your remote lists one provider but not the other, the entry it has is worth trying — this is one of the more dependable cross-brand substitutions.

When it doesn't work

The code works for channels but not the guide

Expected. Guide navigation often depends on coloured or shortcut keys that universal tables do not carry. The arrow keys and OK will still move around the guide, just without the shortcuts.

SAT codes do nothing, CBL codes work

Satellite and cable are separate blocks in most code tables, and providers are not always filed where you would expect. Trying both categories costs one extra attempt and resolves this quickly.

The box responds but the channel numbers are wrong

Some boxes need a leading zero or a confirm press for multi-digit channel numbers. That is box behaviour rather than a code problem — test with channel up and down to confirm the code itself is correct.

Which device key do I use for a cable box?

What is the universal remote code for a Sky box?

Why do Comcast and Spectrum share the same codes?
