Universal remote not working: what to check
Start with the two causes manufacturers name most: batteries and line of sight. Jasco says a red light that doesn't behave as described is most commonly bad batteries, even brand-new ones, and Roku says obstructions and low batteries are the common causes of an unresponsive infrared remote. Then make sure you're using the code list and steps for your exact remote.

How to program a universal remote without codes
Use the remote's code search, which tries codes from its own memory until your device responds. On a GE remote, hold SETUP, press the device button and press POWER to send codes in batches of ten. On a One For All Contour TV, hold SETUP, enter 991, press POWER, then press CH+ until the TV turns off and press SETUP to store it. RCA remotes differ by model.

3, 4 and 5 digit remote codes: which one does your remote take?
Use the length shown in the code list for your own remote. GE's CL3 to CL6 lists and the One For All Contour TV list are all four-digit codes. RCA varies by revision: most RCA revision tables use five-digit codes, but some, such as D770 and D771, use four. Don't add or drop digits to make a code fit.

Universal remotes and streaming devices: what works
It depends on the device. Apple TV can learn an infrared universal remote in Settings → Remotes and Devices → Learn Remote. A Roku TV works with universal remotes using codes Roku publishes, such as 2891 for GE. Amazon doesn't document using an infrared universal remote with Fire TV; it documents HDMI-CEC instead, which lets one remote control devices connected by HDMI.

Which universal remote do I have?
Look inside the battery compartment. GE prints the code-list version (CL3 to CL6) on a sticker under the batteries or on the battery cover; RCA prints a revision number under the battery; One For All prints the model number on the inside of the battery door. That number decides which code list works.

Universal remote vs original remote: what carries over
A universal remote can take over the everyday controls, but how much it covers depends on the remote and the code. Roku notes that on a Roku TV some remotes control only power, volume and input, while others add navigation and playback. Features that rely on the original remote's own hardware, such as a voice button, stay with that remote.

The sequence depends on the remote's brand. On a GE remote, hold SETUP until the red light turns on, press the device button and enter the 4-digit code. On a One For All Contour TV, hold SETUP until the light blinks twice, then enter the code. RCA remotes either use a CODE SEARCH key or have you hold the device key while you type the code, depending on the model.
