Why the remote matters more than the TV
A code is an index into a table held inside one particular remote. The same four digits address different equipment on a different manufacturer's remote, which is why there is no such thing as "the Samsung TV code" in the abstract — only the Samsung code for the remote in your hand.

4 models · 11949 codesGE universal remotes are made by Jasco, which publishes a separate code list for each version of the remote — CL3, CL4, CL5 and CL6. The version is printed inside the battery compartment, and codes are not interchangeable between versions.
Finding your remote's model number
Nearly every universal remote prints its model number inside the battery compartment, usually under the batteries or on the inside of the cover. That number decides which code list applies to you, and using the wrong list is the most common reason a correct-looking code does nothing at all.
Two brands make this especially important. One For All publishes a separate list for each remote it sells, and GE remotes carry a CL3 to CL6 version label whose lists are not interchangeable. In both cases the number on the label matters more than the brand on the front.
