3, 4 and 5 digit remote codes: which one does your remote take?
The short answer
Count the digits your remote accepts before the indicator clears — that tells you which code list format applies to you. What matters far more is the model: a code only means anything to the remote whose internal table it indexes, so a 4-digit code from one brand will not program a different brand's 4-digit remote.
Entering a code of the wrong length is one of the most common reasons a correct code appears not to work. The remote does not warn you — it simply discards the entry, and you conclude the code was wrong when the format was.
This page explains how to tell which format your remote uses, and why finding the list published for your own model matters more than any rule for converting between formats.
Work out which length your remote uses
You do not need the manual. The remote tells you, if you watch the indicator light while entering a code.

What the digits actually encode
A code is an index into one particular remote's internal table, not a serial number for your television. That is the single most important thing about code formats: the number is meaningless away from the remote whose table it indexes.
It follows that you cannot translate a code between remote brands by adjusting its length. Two remotes that both take four digits still hold different tables, so the same four digits address different equipment on each. Length is a format, not a common language.
When your list is the wrong length for your remote
The honest answer is to find the right list rather than to adapt the wrong one. Manufacturers publish code lists per remote model, and that document is the only thing that reliably matches the table inside your handset.
Check the manufacturer's support site for a code list naming your exact model — the model number is inside the battery compartment.
GE remotes carry a CL3, CL4, CL5 or CL6 label inside the battery compartment, and codes from the wrong CL list will not work even on the right remote.
Never pad a code with zeros to reach the required length. A leading zero in a 4-digit code is part of the code; an added one is not.
If no list can be found, use the search method. It needs no list at all and cannot be defeated by a format mismatch.
Where 3-digit codes still exist
3-digit codes belong to an earlier generation of cable and satellite remotes, where the table was small enough that three digits addressed it comfortably. They persist mainly on set-top box remotes supplied by television providers.
If you are holding a current retail universal remote, a 3-digit code is not applicable to it and will be rejected. Codes such as 105 or 133 for Samsung are only meaningful on a remote that asks for exactly three digits.

The mistakes that look like wrong codes
Dropping the leading zero. 0556 typed as 556 is a four-keystroke code entered as three, and the remote discards it.
Entering a 4-digit code on a 5-digit remote. The remote waits for a fifth digit that never comes and times out silently.
Reading a code from a list for a different remote brand. Lengths may match while the tables do not — the numbers are not portable between brands.
Typing too slowly. Several remotes time out between digits; if the indicator clears mid-entry, start again at a normal pace.
If a code fails, re-enter it once carefully before moving on. A meaningful share of apparent code failures are entry failures, and the second attempt is free.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my remote uses 4-digit or 5-digit codes?
Enter setup mode and type digits slowly while watching the indicator. A 4-digit remote clears the light after the fourth digit; a 5-digit remote waits for a fifth. RCA remotes are almost always 5-digit, and One For All and Sky remotes are 4-digit.
What does the first digit of a 5-digit remote code mean?
We cannot tell you from a source we trust. A widely repeated claim online is that it is a device-category prefix, but we have no manufacturer document stating it, so we do not repeat it. Use the code list published for your own remote model.
Can I turn a 4-digit code into a 5-digit code?
Not reliably, and we would not advise trying. Each remote indexes its own table, so a code from a different model is not the same command set in a different format. Find the list for your own remote, or use the search method.
Why won't my remote accept a 3-digit code?
Because it expects four or five digits. 3-digit codes belong to older cable and satellite remotes with much smaller code tables, and current retail universal remotes cannot use them.
Does the leading zero in a code matter?
Yes, always. 0556 is a four-digit code and must be entered with the zero. Typing 556 gives the remote three digits, which it discards while waiting for a fourth.
Are codes the same across remote brands if the length matches?
No. Length is a format, not a guarantee of compatibility. Each brand indexes its own internal table, so a 4-digit One For All code will not program a 4-digit Sky remote to the same device.
