Universal remote codes for AV receivers

The short answer

Program receiver codes onto the AUD, AUX or AMP key, never the TV key. The codes below cover amplifiers, AV receivers and all-in-one home cinema systems, and come from Jasco's published GE lists, so check the CL version inside your remote's battery compartment first.

Receivers are the category where volume punch-through matters most, because a receiver is usually the device you want volume to reach no matter what you are watching.

All-in-one home cinema systems are listed here too. They sit on the same device key and behave the same way for programming purposes, even though they are sold as a different kind of product.

Use the right device key first

AUDAUXAMPAUDIO

Press one of these before entering a receiver code. A remote with no audio device key cannot store one at all — the code table is partitioned by device category.

Volume punch-through is the setting that matters

Punch-through sends volume commands to a fixed device regardless of which device key is selected. On a system built around a receiver that is almost always what you want: volume should reach the amplifier whether you are watching television or playing a disc.

It is also the cause of the most confusing symptom in this area — volume that works on one source and not another, with no obvious pattern. If volume behaves inconsistently after programming a receiver, check punch-through before you question the code.

Input selection rarely survives in full

Receivers label their inputs in ways a universal code table cannot represent — one manufacturer's BD is another's DVD, and custom-renamed inputs exist only in that unit. Expect the numbered or cycling input keys to work and named ones not to.

Power, volume, mute and source cycling are the commands to test. If those work, the code is right, whatever the labelled input keys do.

HDMI-CEC can fight the remote

A receiver in an HDMI chain often participates in CEC, which means the television can send it power and volume commands of its own. Combined with a universal remote you can end up with volume moving twice per press, or a receiver that switches off when the television does.

Disable CEC control on the receiver or the television while you pair, confirm the code behaves on its own, then re-enable whichever you prefer to keep.

When it doesn't work

Every receiver code is rejected

You are almost certainly on the TV device key. Press AUD, AUX or AMP first — an audio code entered under the TV category has nowhere to go.

Volume moves two steps per press

Both the remote and HDMI-CEC are sending volume. Turn off CEC volume control on the television, or set its audio output so it stops relaying.

Power works but the input keys do nothing

Normal on receivers. Named inputs are specific to the unit and rarely map onto a universal table. Test with source cycling instead before rejecting the code.

Which device key do I use for an AV receiver?

AUD, AUX, AMP or AUDIO, depending on your remote. Press it before entering the code — the device key decides which part of the code table is used, so a receiver code entered on the TV key is discarded.

Why does volume control the wrong device?

Volume punch-through is locked to a device key other than the one you expect. It sends volume commands to a fixed device regardless of the key selected, and it is configured separately from the codes themselves.

Are home cinema systems covered by these codes?

Yes. All-in-one home cinema systems are listed alongside receivers and amplifiers here, because they sit on the same device key and program identically.

Why do the named input keys not work on my receiver?

Input labelling is specific to each unit and often renamed by the owner, so a universal code table cannot represent it. Power, volume, mute and source cycling are the commands to judge a code by.
