Universal remote codes for soundbars

The short answer

Program soundbar codes onto the AUD, AUX or AMP key, never the TV key — the device key decides which part of the remote's code table is used, and a soundbar code entered on the TV key is discarded. The codes below come from Jasco's published GE lists, so find the CL version inside your remote's battery compartment first.

Soundbars are where most universal remote setups go wrong, and the cause is almost never the code. It is the device key. Every other step can be correct and the pairing will still fail if the remote was on TV when you entered an audio code.

The second complication is that you may not need a soundbar code at all. Where the soundbar is connected over HDMI-ARC, the television usually passes volume commands through to it, so the TV code alone gives you working volume. The sections below cover how to tell which situation you are in before you start.

Use the right device key first

Press one of these before entering a soundbar code. If your remote has no audio key, it cannot store a soundbar code on any other key — the code table is partitioned by device category.

First check whether you need a soundbar code at all

If the soundbar is connected to the television over HDMI-ARC or eARC, the television is usually the volume controller: it receives a volume command and passes it to the soundbar over the HDMI link. In that arrangement a working TV code already gives you volume, and programming the soundbar separately adds nothing.

Test it before you start. Program the TV key, then press volume up. If the soundbar's own volume display responds, you are done. Only if the television's internal speakers respond instead, or nothing happens, do you need a separate soundbar code.

Optical and 3.5mm connections have no return path for control commands, so soundbars connected that way always need their own code.

Volume punch-through, and why volume goes to the wrong device

Punch-through is a setting that sends volume commands to a fixed device regardless of which device key is currently selected. It exists because it is what most people want: volume should reach the soundbar whether you are watching television or playing a disc.

It also produces the most confusing symptom in this whole area — volume that works on one device and refuses to move on another, with no apparent pattern. If volume behaves inconsistently after you program a soundbar, punch-through is the first thing to check, not the code.

Most remotes let you set it explicitly: enter setup mode, press the device key you want volume locked to, and enter the punch-through sequence from your remote's instructions. A factory reset clears it back to the default.

Sonos soundbars work differently

Sonos soundbars include an infrared receiver, and the standard Sonos setup process has you teach the soundbar your existing remote's volume commands rather than teaching the remote a Sonos code. That is the reverse of how every other brand on this page works.

Where a remote does carry a Sonos entry, pairing by code works normally. If it proves awkward, the Sonos app's own remote-learning flow is the more reliable route, and it accepts commands from a universal remote programmed to any brand.

Reading 5-digit soundbar codes

Code formats differ by manufacturer: some remotes take four digits, others five, and several use brand buttons rather than numbers at all. What matters is using the list published for your specific remote.

Entering a code of the wrong length fails silently on most remotes, which is why a correct-looking code can appear not to work.

When it doesn't work

Every soundbar code is rejected

You are almost certainly on the TV device key. Press AUD, AUX or AMP first — the remote partitions its code table by device category, and an audio code entered under the TV category has nowhere to go.

Volume always goes to the television, never the soundbar

Volume punch-through is locked to the TV key. Re-set it to the audio key using your remote's punch-through sequence, or reset the remote and program the audio device first.

The soundbar responds but the TV volume moves too

Both are receiving the command — the soundbar directly by infrared, the television through HDMI-CEC. Disable CEC volume control on the television, or set the TV's audio output so its internal speakers stay muted.

The remote has no audio device key at all

Some entry-level remotes only carry TV and one other category. Those cannot store a soundbar code. Where the soundbar is on HDMI-ARC, the TV code will still give you volume through the television's pass-through.

Which device key do I use for a soundbar?

AUD, AUX, AMP or AUDIO, depending on your remote. Press it before entering the code. The device key decides which part of the remote's code table is used, so a soundbar code entered on the TV key is discarded.

What is the universal remote code for a Samsung soundbar?

Do I need a soundbar code if the soundbar is on HDMI-ARC?

Usually not. Over ARC the television passes volume commands to the soundbar, so a working TV code gives you volume already. Test with the TV key programmed before setting up a separate audio code.

Why does volume control the wrong device?

Volume punch-through is locked to a device key other than the one you expect. It sends volume commands to a fixed device regardless of the selected key, and it is set separately from the codes themselves.

How do I pair a universal remote with a Sonos soundbar?

Sonos works in reverse: instead of teaching the remote a Sonos code, you teach the Sonos soundbar your remote's volume commands through the Sonos app. That route works whatever brand your remote is programmed to.

Can one remote control the TV and the soundbar together?
