How to reset Roku remote

Sources checked · how we check

Check the handset first: a simple Roku remote has no voice button and uses infrared; voice remotes have a microphone or voice-search button. Rechargeable remotes use a different restart procedure from remotes with removable batteries.

01 · Start here

Before resetting your device

  1. Check for a clear path between a simple remote and the Roku receiver. Replace weak removable batteries or charge a rechargeable remote.

Reset and reconnect your Roku remote

Before you start

These instructions restart the handset. The Reset button on the Roku player or television is a different control and can erase that device's setup.

Remote with removable batteries

Remove batteries → press two buttons → refit batteries

  1. Take out both batteries and press any two buttons.
  2. Insert the batteries again, negative end first. Use a fresh matching pair if needed.

If the device still does not work

If a voice remote needs pairing, restart the Roku device, then hold Pairing for five seconds, or Back and Home for five seconds on models without Pairing. Wait for the on-screen pairing message.

After the reset

Test navigation and playback, then test the TV's power and volume separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Roku simple remote need pairing?

No. Its infrared signal needs a clear path to the receiver; the voice-remote pairing buttons do not apply.

Is a 20-second hold the same as pairing?

No. On the rechargeable models above, 20 seconds restarts the remote. The pairing instructions use a five-second hold.
