How to reset Apple TV remote

Sources checked · how we check

Apple calls this a remote restart. These steps cover Siri Remote and Apple TV Remote models with a TV/Control Center button and volume keys; older white or aluminium Apple Remotes use different instructions.

01 · Start here

Before resetting your device

  1. If the remote is low on charge, charge it for 30 minutes. Move close to the Apple TV and clear obstructions.

02 · Reset and reconnect

Reset and reconnect your Apple TV remote

Before you start

Restarting the handset is separate from resetting the Apple TV box. Watch the status light on the box during the restart.

Restart Siri Remote / Apple TV Remote

TV/Control Center + Volume Down · about 5 seconds

  1. Hold both buttons until the Apple TV status light turns off and back on.
  2. Release, wait five to ten seconds, then press any button.
  3. Look for Remote Connected; if it does not appear, try pairing.

Pair again

Back (or Menu) + Volume Up · 5 seconds

  1. Hold the remote about three inches from Apple TV and hold both buttons for five seconds.
  2. Place the remote on top of the box if prompted.

If the device still does not work

If only volume fails, check Settings → Remotes and Devices → Volume Control. Apple documents selecting a different control mode that matches your TV or audio setup.

After the reset

Check navigation and volume independently so you can tell whether the remaining issue is pairing or audio control.

Frequently asked questions
