How to reset Firestick remote

Sources checked · how we check

This page covers the Fire TV remote in your hand. Identify it before starting: Amazon lists separate procedures for most remotes, the first-generation Alexa Voice Remote and the Basic Edition Remote.

01 · Start here

Before resetting your device

  1. Identify your remote generation using Amazon's linked guide. Basic Edition owners should use its dedicated section instead of the sequence below.

02 · Reset and reconnect

Before you start

Use the Left button in this remote procedure. Back plus Right is a device factory-reset shortcut, not a handset reset.

Most Fire TV remotes

Left + Menu + Back · 12 seconds

  1. Disconnect the Fire TV Stick from power and HDMI; wait 60 seconds.
  2. Hold Left, Menu and Back together for 12 seconds. Release and wait five seconds.
  3. Remove the remote batteries. Reconnect the Stick and wait for its remote-detection error on screen.
  4. Refit the batteries and press Home.

First-generation Alexa Voice Remote: use Left + Menu for the 12-second hold; omit Back. The remaining steps are the same.

If the device still does not work

If pairing does not complete, hold Home for 10 seconds. A blue blink confirms pairing on remotes equipped with that indicator.

After the reset

Check navigation, playback and voice input after the remote reconnects.

Frequently asked questions

Do these steps cover the Basic Edition Remote?

No. Follow the Basic Edition section in Amazon's source; its Home and Menu sequence is different.

Will this factory reset my Fire TV Stick?

This procedure resets the handset and reconnects it. It does not ask you to select Reset to Factory Defaults on the Stick.
