How to connect a Roku remote
Sources checked · how we check
How you connect depends on the remote. A simple remote uses infrared and needs no pairing; a voice remote has to be paired with your Roku device. If your remote has a microphone, it's a voice remote.
01 · Before you start
Check these first
- Check which remote you have: simple remotes have no microphone, and they only work with Roku TVs.
- Put fresh matching batteries in the remote, or pull out the battery tab on a new one.

Batteries in → point at the Roku TV
- Insert new matching batteries, or remove the battery pull tab.
- Point the remote at the front of your Roku TV. There's no pairing button and nothing to pair.
Roku simple remotes use infrared and need a clear line of sight to the TV.
Control your TV's power and volume
Settings → Remotes & devices → Remotes → Set up remote for TV control
- Press Home and go to Settings → Remotes & devices → Remotes.
- Choose your voice remote, select Set up remote for TV control, and follow the on-screen steps. The TV plays sounds and you confirm whether you hear them.
Roku lists this for the Roku Voice Remote, Voice Remote Pro and Voice Remote Pro 2nd Edition.

If it still won't connect
Make sure the Roku device and the remote are in pairing mode at the same time. Restart the streaming device and repeat the steps, and move away from other electronics that could interfere. Until the remote works, the free Roku mobile app can control the device.
