How to connect a printer to a Windows laptop or PC
Sources checked · how we check
Windows finds most printers from Printers & scanners. Plug the printer in by USB, or put it on the same network as the PC, then add it from the list.
01 · Before you start
Check these first
- Turn on the printer.
- For a USB printer, plug it into the PC. For a wireless or network printer, make sure it's connected to the same network as the PC.
- If the printer isn't on your Wi-Fi yet, set that up first with the printer Wi-Fi guide.
02 · Connect
Step by step, by device
Windows 11
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device
- Select Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, and check whether the printer is already listed.
- Next to Add a printer & scanner, select Add device. The list can take a few minutes to fill.
- Find your printer and select Add device.
Windows 10
Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners → Add a printer or scanner
- Select Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner and wait for Windows to find nearby printers.
- Choose your printer and select Add device.
When the printer isn't in the list
The printer that I want isn't listed → Add manually
- On Windows 11, next to The printer that I want isn't listed, select Add a new device manually. On Windows 10, select The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Follow the instructions in the Add Printer window.
If it still won't connect
Run the printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Turn the printer off, unplug it, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Check the USB cable is connected or the printer's wireless option is on. If it still won't print, remove the printer in Printers & scanners and add it again, then install the latest driver from the printer maker's website.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't Windows find my wireless printer?
The printer has to be on the same network as the PC. The printer list can also take a few minutes to fill; if it still isn't there, use The printer that I want isn't listed.
Do I need to install a printer driver?
Microsoft says to check Windows Update for updated drivers after the printer installs, and to install the latest driver from the manufacturer if printing problems continue.
