How to connect a Canon printer to a Windows laptop
Sources checked · how we check
Canon printers reach a computer in two ways: over your network, or by USB cable straight to the laptop. Either way, Windows adds the printer from Printers & scanners.
01 · Before you start
Check these first
- Turn the printer on.
- For a network connection, put the printer on the same Wi-Fi as the laptop first; the Canon Wi-Fi guide has the WPS steps.
- For a USB connection, Canon notes the printer is connected one-to-one with that computer.

02 · Connect
Step by step, by device
Add the printer: Windows 11
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device
- Select Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Next to Add a printer & scanner, select Add device. The list can take a few minutes to fill.
- Select your Canon printer, then select Add device.
Add the printer: Windows 10
Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners → Add a printer or scanner
- Select Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner and wait for Windows to find it.
- Select your Canon printer, then select Add device.
Connect by USB cable
USB cable from printer to laptop → Windows adds it
- Connect the printer to the computer with a USB cable, as Canon describes for a direct connection.
- Windows normally installs it automatically; if it doesn't, add it from Printers & scanners as above.

When Windows can't find it
The printer that I want isn't listed → Add a new device manually
- On Windows 11, next to The printer that I want isn't listed, select Add a new device manually. On Windows 10, select The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Follow the instructions in the Add Printer window.
If it still won't connect
Run the printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Turn the printer off, unplug it, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Check the USB cable is connected or the printer's wireless option is on. If it still won't print, remove the printer in Printers & scanners and add it again, then install the latest driver from Canon.

Can I connect a Canon printer with a USB cable instead?
Yes. Canon describes a direct USB connection, where the printer is connected one-to-one with that computer.
