How to turn subtitles on or off on a TV
Sources checked · how we check
TVs keep captions in their accessibility settings, but streaming apps and discs have their own switches. If turning captions off on the TV doesn't work, change the setting in the app too.
01 · Before you start
Check these first
- Samsung notes that apps such as Netflix and HBO Max have their own caption settings, so captions may need turning off inside the app as well.
- For Blu-ray discs and DVDs, choose captions from the disc menu before playback.
02 · Change the setting
Step by step, by device
Samsung TV
Settings → General → Accessibility → Caption Settings → Caption
- From the Home screen, select Settings, then General, then Accessibility.
- Select Caption Settings, and select Caption to turn it on or off.
Shortcut: on a Samsung Smart Remote, press and hold Mute (or Volume if there's no Mute button), then choose Captions.
LG TV
Settings → All Settings → General → Accessibility → Closed Caption
- 2021 and 2022 models (webOS 6.0 and webOS 22): press the Settings button and select All Settings → General → Accessibility → Closed Caption.
- 2017 to 2019 models (webOS 3.5 to 4.5): press the Settings button and select All Settings → Accessibility → Closed Caption.
- Set Closed Caption to On or Off.
If your remote has no Settings button, press Home and open Settings from the on-screen menu.
Roku TV or Roku player
Home → Settings → Accessibility → Captions mode
- Press Home, scroll and select Settings, then select Accessibility. If Accessibility isn't listed, select Captions.
- Select Captions mode and choose Off, On always, On replay or On mute.
- During playback you can also press Star, select Closed captioning and choose a mode.
Fire TV
During playback: Menu → Subtitles → Off
- Start playing the video and press the Menu button on the Fire TV remote or in the Fire TV app.
- Select Subtitles, then select Off. To turn them on, choose an option instead.
- Press Menu again to return to the video.

If the setting doesn't change
Roku says the caption settings on the device have no effect on apps such as Netflix, Hulu and Sling TV, which use their own caption settings, and that not every app offers captions during playback. If captions won't turn off, open the subtitles or audio menu inside the app you're watching.
Frequently asked questions
Why are subtitles still on in Netflix after I turned them off on the TV?
Netflix and other apps have their own caption settings. Samsung and Roku both say the TV setting doesn't control them, so turn captions off inside the app.
What does On mute mean on a Roku?
Captions appear only when the volume is muted. Roku notes this option isn't available on every Roku device.
