How to set a sleep timer on a TV
Sources checked · how we check
A sleep timer turns the TV off after the time you choose. Samsung keeps it in the Time settings; a Roku TV has it in Settings, in the Options menu and as a shortcut on the home screen.
01 · Before you start
Check these first
- On a Samsung TV, the Sleep Timer can be set for up to 180 minutes.
- If the option is greyed out, Samsung says to change to the TV or an HDMI source; an app can't be open in the background.

02 · Change the setting
Step by step, by device

- Open Settings (All Settings) and select General (General & Privacy).
- Select System Manager → Time → Sleep Timer.
- Choose how long the TV should stay on before it powers itself off.

Roku TV: from Settings
Home → Settings → System → Time → Sleep timer
- Press Home, then select Settings → System → Time → Sleep timer.
- Choose a time interval.
Roku TV: while watching
Star → Sleep timer, or the Sleep Timer tile
- Press Star on the Roku remote, scroll to Sleep timer in the Options menu and choose a time.
- Or, from the home screen app grid, select the Sleep Timer shortcut tile.
- With a Roku voice remote, hold the Voice button and say something like "turn off TV in 30 minutes".
Only one sleep timer can be active at a time. To change or cancel it, repeat the steps and pick a different interval or cancel.
If the setting doesn't change
If the Sleep Timer option is greyed out on a Samsung TV, switch to the TV or an HDMI source and make sure no app is open in the background, then try again.
