How to change the picture mode on a TV

Sources checked · how we check

Picture modes are presets for different rooms and content. Pick one first, then fine-tune it if you need to; a Roku TV remembers a different mode for each input.

01 · Before you start

Check these first

  1. Samsung describes Standard as suitable for most viewing environments, and Movie as suited to a dark room.
  2. Filmmaker Mode shows content without changes to the picture settings, and Samsung notes it may look darker than other modes.

02 · Change the setting

Step by step, by device

Samsung TV

Settings (All Settings) → Picture → Picture mode

  1. Go to Settings (All Settings) and select Picture.
  2. Select Picture mode and choose Standard, Dynamic, Eco, Movie or Filmmaker Mode.

To undo your changes: Settings (All Settings) → Picture → Expert Settings → Reset Picture, then Yes.

Roku TV

Star → Picture Settings → Picture Mode

  1. Press Star on the Roku remote to open TV Settings.
  2. Select Picture Settings, then Picture Mode.
  3. Use the left and right buttons to change it. Roku recommends Roku Smart Picture, which picks the mode for the content.

The other modes are Low Power, Standard, Vivid, Sports and Movie. Select Customize picture in the same menu to fine-tune or reset the current mode.

If the setting doesn't change

A Roku TV stores a separate picture mode for each input, so a mode you set while watching the cable box on HDMI 1 won't apply when you stream. Set the mode on each input, or use the option in Picture Settings to apply settings to all inputs.
