How to reset Kindle

Sources checked · how we check

This guide is for Kindle e-readers. Match the menu shown on your device; Amazon lists different labels across generations. A Fire tablet is a different product.

01 · Start here

Restart before erasing your setup

  1. Hold the Power button until the power menu appears, then select Restart.
  2. If the screen does not respond, use Amazon's linked restart troubleshooting before considering an erase.

How to factory reset Kindle

Before you confirm

Factory reset removes downloaded and personal content, including anything unsynced, and deregisters the Kindle. Save what you need before continuing.

Kindle e-reader Settings

Quick Actions or Menu → Settings or All Settings

  1. From Home, open Quick Actions by swiping down, or use Menu, then open Settings.
  2. Choose Device Options, or Menu on older models, then Factory Reset. Older models may show Reset Device instead.
  3. Confirm with Yes when ready to erase.

If you can't open the reset menu

If your menus differ, check Amazon's generation-specific labels in the source. Do not substitute a Fire tablet button sequence.

After the reset

Register the Kindle again with your Amazon account before downloading your library.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Kindle factory reset preserve unsynced notes?

No. Amazon warns that unsynced content is removed, so sync or save needed content before erasing.
