How to reset iPad

Sources checked · how we check

Start with a restart for a responsive iPad. For an erase, use Settings when you can unlock it; the fallback below addresses a forgotten passcode.

Restart before erasing your setup

  1. Without a Home button, hold the top button with either volume button to display the power slider. With a Home button, hold only the top button.
  2. Slide to switch off and wait 30 seconds. Hold the top button again until the Apple logo appears.

Before you confirm

Erasing deletes personal content. Back up the iPad first and have its passcode and Apple Account password ready.

An iPad you can unlock

  1. Select Erase All Content and Settings, then Continue.
  2. Review the options, enter the requested credentials and confirm.

On cellular models, review any eSIM choice; deleting it requires carrier reactivation.

If you can't open the reset menu

On supported iPadOS versions, the unavailable screen offers an erase option. This needs Find My enabled beforehand, internet and your Apple Account password. Apple's source also links computer recovery if that option is missing.

After the reset
