How to reset Apple Watch

Sources checked · how we check

For a fresh start, choose between unpairing with your iPhone and erasing on the watch. Unpairing also removes Activation Lock; a watch-only erase leaves it enabled.

01 · Start here

Restart before erasing your setup

  1. Take the watch off its charger. Hold the side button to show the sliders, tap the power icon and slide to switch off.
  2. Hold the side button again until the Apple logo appears. If normal restart is impossible, hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, until the logo appears.

02 · Factory reset

Before you confirm

Both reset methods erase the watch. Have its passcode and Apple Account password ready. For cellular models, keep the plan for reuse or remove it when giving the watch away; cancelling service requires your carrier.

With the paired iPhone

Watch app → My Watch → All Watches

  1. Keep both devices together. Tap the information button beside your watch and select Unpair Apple Watch.
  2. Confirm the watch, review the cellular-plan choice, enter your Apple Account password and complete Unpair.

On the watch

Frequently asked questions

Does erasing the watch remove Activation Lock?

Only unpairing through the paired iPhone removes it in these procedures. Erasing on the watch still requires the associated Apple Account for activation.
