How to turn Restricted Mode on or off on YouTube
Sources checked · how we check
YouTube says Restricted Mode can help screen out potentially mature content. You can switch it on or off in your account, unless a parent or network administrator has turned it on for you.
01 · Before you start
Check these first
- Sign in to your YouTube account first.
- YouTube says a network administrator at a library, university or other public institution may have turned Restricted Mode on, and a parent can turn it on through Family Link. In those cases the setting can't be changed from your account.
02 · Change the setting
Step by step, by device
Computer
Profile photo → Restricted Mode → Activate Restricted Mode
- Sign in, then click your profile photo at the top right.
- At the bottom, select Restricted Mode.
- In the box that opens, turn Activate Restricted Mode on or off.
YouTube app on Android
Profile photo → Settings → General → Restricted Mode
- Sign in, then tap your profile photo at the top right.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Turn Restricted Mode on or off.

If the setting doesn't change
If you can't turn Restricted Mode off, it's being set outside your account. YouTube says that when a parent turns it on through Family Link, a child can't change it on any device they're signed in to, and that network administrators at libraries, universities and other institutions can turn it on for their computers. Ask the parent or administrator who manages the setting.
