How to turn SafeSearch on or off on Google
Sources checked · how we check
SafeSearch controls whether Google Search shows explicit results. It has three settings, and it can be locked by whoever manages your account, device or network.
01 · Before you start
Check these first
- Filter blocks all explicit results. Google makes it the default when its systems indicate you may be under 18.
- Blur blurs explicit images and is otherwise the default. Off shows all results, which may include explicit content.

02 · Change the setting
Step by step, by device
SafeSearch settings
google.com/safesearch → Filter, Blur or Off
- Go to your SafeSearch settings at google.com/safesearch.
- Select Filter, Blur or Off.

If the setting doesn't change
If you see a lock icon, your SafeSearch setting is locked. Google says parents or schools can lock it, some public Wi-Fi networks enforce it, device or network administrators can lock it in Filter, and it's turned on automatically when Google's systems indicate you may be under 18. Parents managing an account in Family Link can also change it. The setting has to be changed by whoever locked it.

Frequently asked questions
Why is SafeSearch locked?
Google says a parent, school, public Wi-Fi network, or device or network administrator can lock it, and it turns on automatically when Google's systems indicate you may be under 18.
What's the difference between Filter and Blur?
Filter blocks all explicit results. Blur blurs explicit images, but explicit text and links may still show.
