How to reset Xfinity Gateway

Sources checked · how we check

Xfinity's modem and router are usually one device, the Gateway. Restart it first. Xfinity publishes a factory reset only for the XB2 and XB3.

01 · Start here

Restart before erasing your setup

  1. In the Xfinity app, tap the WiFi icon → Troubleshoot → Restart your Gateway.
  2. Or unplug the power cable, wait one minute and plug it back in. A restart takes up to 12 minutes, and your home network, Voice and Home services are unavailable meanwhile.

How to factory reset Xfinity Gateway

Before you confirm

A factory reset erases custom settings such as your WiFi name and password. Xfinity Voice stops during the reset and returns when the Gateway restarts.

XB2 or XB3: factory reset

Reset hole on the back · 30 seconds

  1. Find the Reset button, a small hole on the back of the Gateway.
  2. Press and hold it with a paper clip or pin for 30 seconds, then release.
  3. The lights flash, then become steady when the Gateway is ready.

If you can't open the reset menu

Xfinity's factory reset article covers only the XB2 and XB3. For an XB6, XB7 or XB8, restart the Gateway and contact Xfinity rather than following unofficial button sequences.

After the reset

Reconnect your devices with the default WiFi name and password printed on the label on the bottom of the Gateway.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset my Xfinity modem?

The Xfinity modem is the Gateway. Restart it from the app or by unplugging it for one minute; XB2 and XB3 Gateways can be factory reset with a 30-second hold.

Why are there no XB7 reset steps here?

Xfinity has not published a factory reset article for newer Gateways, and community answers disagree on the button and hold time.
