What the light on a Fire TV Stick remote means

Sources checked · how we check

Amazon's Fire TV remotes use their light to tell you what is wrong, but only once you put the remote into troubleshooting mode. Press Rewind and Right together for three seconds, then press Menu. The light turns green, and the next button you press makes it flash the colour for the problem.

What this covers

Amazon says not all Fire TV remotes have an LED. To check yours, press the Alexa Voice button: if the light at the top flashes, the remote supports troubleshooting mode and the colours below. To turn the mode off afterwards, press Play/Pause and Up together for three seconds, press Menu, then take the batteries out and put them back.

If none of these match your light

If the light does nothing at all when you press the Alexa Voice button, either the remote has no LED or it has no power. Try fresh AAA alkaline batteries first. If the remote will not pair, Amazon's pairing steps are to keep it within 10 feet (3 m) of the Fire TV and hold Home for about 10 seconds, then reset the remote.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Fire TV remote light orange?

In troubleshooting mode, orange means the remote is not paired with your Fire TV. Restart the Fire TV, wait for "Cannot detect your remote" on screen, then hold the Home button for 10 seconds to pair it again.

How do I get my Fire TV remote to show what is wrong?

Put it into troubleshooting mode: press Rewind and Right together for three seconds, then press Menu. The light turns green. Press any button, and the light flashes a colour for the problem.

My Fire TV remote flashes red. What does that mean?

In troubleshooting mode, slow red flashing means low batteries, so replace them. Fast red flashing points to a problem with the remote itself, which needs a reset.

Does every Fire TV remote have a light?

No. Amazon says not all remotes have an LED. Press the Alexa Voice button: if the light at the top flashes, yours does, and it supports troubleshooting mode.
