How to set up a Chromecast

Sources checked · how we check

Every Chromecast is set up from the Google Home app on your phone. Plug the Chromecast into the TV's HDMI port and power, then let the app find it.

01 · Before you start

Check these first

  1. You need a display with an HDMI input, a Google Account, and a secure wireless or Ethernet connection.
  2. Install the latest Google Home app on your phone or tablet. Setting up on a 5 GHz network needs a phone that supports 5 GHz.
  3. Plug the Chromecast in before you start in the Google Home app.

Step by step, by device

Chromecast with Google TV

Plug in → Google Home app → Set up Chromecast → scan the QR code

  1. Turn on the TV, plug the Chromecast into an HDMI port and connect the power adapter, then switch the TV to that HDMI input.
  2. The remote should pair automatically. If you're prompted, press and hold the Back and Home buttons.
  3. Open the Google Home app, select Set up Chromecast and choose your home. Let the app use your phone's camera, then scan the QR code on the TV, or enter the setup code in the app instead.
  4. Follow the app's steps, then finish on the TV: set the remote's volume and power buttons for your TV or audio device and wait for apps to install.

Chromecast (3rd generation or older)

Plug in → Google Home app → Add device → scan the QR code

  1. Plug the Chromecast in before connecting it in the Google Home app.
  2. Open the Google Home app and select Add device.
  3. Scan the QR code on the TV; a check mark appears when the scan is done. You can use the setup code instead.
  4. Wait for the app to connect. It shows Connected, then follow the in-app steps to finish.

Google lists Android 9.0 or later for this setup, on a phone that supports 5 GHz if your network is 5 GHz.

If it still won't connect

If the app can't connect to an older Chromecast, Google suggests rebooting the Chromecast, resetting the router, connecting manually to the Chromecast's own network name, or factory resetting the device. Check too that location, Bluetooth and camera permissions are on for the Google Home app.
