How to turn on an HP laptop that won't start
Sources checked · how we check
An HP laptop turns on with its power button. If nothing happens, HP's first fix is a hard reset, which doesn't touch your saved data.
01 · Before you start
Check these first
- If the computer doesn't turn on right away, HP says to wait at least 5 minutes: it may be installing a Windows or BIOS update with a blank screen.
- Don't turn it off or unplug it during an update; HP warns interrupting it might damage the computer.
02 · Change the setting
Step by step, by device
Hard reset (laptop)
Turn off → unplug adapter → hold power button about 20 seconds → reconnect
- Turn off the computer and disconnect the AC adapter.
- Remove memory cards, and disconnect printers, scanners, external hard drives and USB flash drives. Keep the mouse, keyboard and monitor connected.
- With the adapter unplugged, press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds.
- Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the computer.
HP says a hard reset doesn't affect data saved on the computer. Use the AC adapter that came with the computer.
If the setting doesn't change
If the laptop still doesn't turn on after the hard reset, HP's article goes on to further steps depending on whether it turns on but doesn't start, and offers HP's automated diagnostics and support.
